My purpose in writing this book is to stimulate an objective examination of the benefits and costs of public health responses, particularly concerning the health and well-being of our most precious resource: our children. 

Only an honest, objective review of the data will allow us to determine what lessons we have learned from this pandemic and what we can do better next time—and yes, there will be a next time. The first step in answering “How?” is to look at what went well and what went wrong this time.
